Fikret Faramazoglu face new charges

 Fikret Faramazoglu, the  Editor of the site  Jam.az has faced  new, more serious charges. He was arrested on June 30, 2016 and charged with extortion by threats. According to the Interior Ministry, the journalist was detained at the time of taking 3,000 manats bribes from a businessman at a rate of. Today was also charged with extortion by threatening a group of persons by prior agreement, told a lawyer Elchin Sadigov. Under the previous charge Faramaoglu   could face from 3 to 5 years in prison, but now from 5 to 10 years with confiscation of property. The lawyer called the new charges absurd.

"The reason for the charges is the publication of a journalist. Owners of commercial properties complained that his articles are biased, denigrate their honor and dignity, and are written in order to extort money from them. But there is no evidence," said the lawyer.

"We have put forward a request to prove the absence of contacts between the owners and Faramazoglu, such as localization of the  journalist’s phones and owners of facilities, expertise fingerprints on banknotes confiscated from journalists," Sadigov said.  The Interior Ministry claimed that Faramazoglu together with a group of people got a lot of money from many businessmen and officials, blackmailing their publication of compromising. Human rights activists have recognized Faramazoglu  as a political pisoner.-06B-
