Flags of Ukraine and Azerbaijan
The flag of Ukraine was removed from the Vienne City Hall in France because of Kiev's solidarity with Baku
Baku/07.10.23/Turan:The city authorities of Vienne in southeastern France have taken the unusual step of removing the Ukrainian flag from the facade of the city hall, citing recent remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The decision, which has attracted attention both locally and internationally, was reported by the newspaper Le Dauphine Libere.
The Ukrainian flag had been proudly displayed on the Vienne City Hall's facade since February 2022, symbolizing the city's support for Ukraine. However, according to a statement from the Mayor's office, this gesture of solidarity has been rescinded in light of recent comments made by President Zelensky following his telephone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on October 4th.
In his Telegram channel statement after the call, President Zelensky expressed gratitude to Baku "for the tangible humanitarian assistance provided by Azerbaijan to Ukraine" and acknowledged their support for Ukraine's energy sector, particularly during the winter months. These expressions of gratitude and bilateral cooperation appeared to have stirred controversy and prompted the flag's removal.
The telephone conversation between the two leaders also reiterated their commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. Additionally, they engaged in a meaningful exchange of views on regional security, discussed existing threats, and explored potential avenues for future cooperation.
It should be noted that Baku and Kiev are dissatisfied with the contradictory position of France in relation to the sovereignty of Azerbaijan and Ukraine.--0--
