The NGO Coalition for Transparency prepares a general meeting
On April 30 will be held a general meeting of NGOs in the Extractive Industries Transparency. According to the Coalition member, renowned economist Gubad Ibadoglu, a meeting is planned to elect new governing bodies, hearing the report on activity for 2 years. "On June 1 Transparency Initiative in the extractive industry will discuss the issue of Azerbaijan, and this issue will also be discussed at the general meeting," he said.
According to Ibadoglu, the regional representative of the Secretariat of Transparency Initiative Dweik Rogan will arrive in Baku on the eve of the discussion on the status of Azerbaijan. He intends to find out the state of affairs in civil society and to report thereon to Oslo, where will be discussed and decided whether to raise the status of Azerbaijan, or leave it at the current level.
* Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative was proposed by the British Prime Minister Tony Blair in October 2002. The main goal is transparency of information about payments of extractive companies and revenues of governments that are rich in natural resources. It provides the interaction of the government, mining companies and civil society.
In February 2009, Azerbaijan became the first country to achieve compliance with EITI. However, on October 27, 2014 the government was no longer interested in the transparency of oil revenues, and announced its intention to withdraw from the EITI.
In April 2015 the International Organization "Transparency Initiative in Extractive Industries" (EITI) lowered status of Azerbaijan in this structure from the "permanent member" to "candidate countries." The decision was taken by the Board of EITI in response to the crackdown on civil society. EITI decision deprived the Azerbaijani authorities of the international financial assistance. After the fall in oil prices, Baku "suddenly" realizes that it needs the support of donors, and resumes negotiations with of EITI, hoping to regain its former status. However, both EITI and international financial institutions, as a conditions demand the resolution of the problems of civil society.—0—

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
