Baku / 01.08.20 / Turan: On July 30, a preparatory meeting was held in the Sumgayit city court on the case of Elchin Mammad, head of the Legal Education of Sumgayit Youth NGO.
At the meeting chaired by Parviz Hajiyev, lawyer Fariz Namazli made two petitions.
In particular, he proposed to change the preventive measure and release Mammad from custody.
The lawyer drew attention to the fact that, at this stage of the proceedings, when the case is already in court, Mammad, being at large, will no longer be able to influence the participants in the criminal process, or to hide from the investigation.
On the other hand, Mammad does not consider himself guilty. According to the investigation, the stolen items were presented by the police to the complainant.
The latter, in a statement attached to the case, indicates that she no longer has a complaint against the accused.
As for the cartridges “found” in Mammad's office, they, according to the lawyer, cannot be considered components of firearms.
For there is no weapon itself, and for this episode, criminal proceedings should be terminated.
Mammad said that he did not intend to interfere with the normal conduct of the trial, since he himself was interested in restoring justice.
Mammad assured that, being a human rights activist, taking into account his authority in society and participation in the recent parliamentary elections as a candidate for deputy, he will not allow actions that pose a threat to society.
However, the judge denied both motions and scheduled a hearing on the merits for August 14.
Mammad was arrested in March of this year on charges of theft and illegal possession of weapons.
A woman, whom he provided legal aid to, filed a complaint against him. The same woman had previously filed a complaint with the police against another journalist - the editor of the website criminal.az Anar Mammadov.
Elchin Mammad connects the criminal case with his human rights activities.
He believes that his persecution on a trumped-up charge contradicts the policy of President Ilham Aliyev to fight corruption and carry out judicial and legal reforms.
Mammad hopes that his trial will be fair.
Several international organizations have condemned the persecution of Mammad. –06D-
