Samir Ashurov went on a hunger strike
Baku/21.04.22/Turan: Activist Samir Ashurov, detained on April 19, denies the criminal charge against him. Today, his lawyer Elchin Sadigov visited Ashurov at the Nizami district police department in Baku.
The activist told the lawyer that on April 19 he received a passport and planned to go abroad, but on the same day a provocation was committed against him. So, on the evening of April 19, when Ashurov was returning home near the Neftchilar metro station, he was attacked by an unknown person. (As it turned out later, it was Elshan Nabiev, who was later recognized as a victim).
The attacker knocked Ashurov down, but he managed to escape and call for help. Police officers immediately appeared, who detained him and put a knife in his right jacket pocket. Ashurov threw away the knife, but the police again put the knife in his pocket and brought it to the 24th police station. There Ashurov was beaten, and later he was beaten again in the Nizami department. The lawyer saw signs of beatings and bruises on the left temple and chest of the activist.
Ashurov was charged under the Article 126.2.4 of the Criminal Code (Intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm from hooligan motives), which provides for punishment by imprisonment from 6 to 11 years.
Ashurov denies the accusation and went on a hunger strike demanding an end to his persecution, the lawyer said. Today Ashurov must appear before the court to choose a measure of restraint in the form of arrest.
Ashurov was expelled from Germany on March 29 and upon arrival announced threats of his arrest.—03B06-

In the annals of Azerbaijan's oil-rich history, the name Witold Zglenicki may not readily come to mind, yet his contributions to the burgeoning oil industry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries are profound and enduring. As the Polish Embassy in Azerbaijan recently commemorated his legacy on April 22 with the presentation of a book detailing his remarkable life, questions arise about why this towering figure remains largely overlooked in the streets and monuments of Baku.
