Akif Alizadeh is Appointed New President of the Academy of Sciences
On Wednesday, the National Academy of Sciences held a special election for president. Members of the Academy participated in the vote. The elections were uncontested, as the only candidate was 79 year-old Academician, Akif Alizadeh.
He was born on February 25, 1934 in Baku, and comes from a well-known Baku family. His grandfather, Agha Alizadeh, was Sheikh of Baku province prior to Soviet power.
Akif Alizadeh graduated from the Institute of Industry of Azerbaijan, and since 1957, he worked at the Institute of Geology of the Academy of Sciences. At 35, he defended his doctoral thesis.
From 1976 to present, he was the Director of the Institute of Geology. He has gained credibility among scientists and the public, and has received government awards.
The previous president of the Academy, Mahmud Kerimov, died suddenly two months ago of a heart attack.-05D-

According to him, the sewer system could not handle the large volume of floodwater, which led to the drowning of two people in a tunnel in the Sabunchu district of Baku.
