Baku/28.01.21/Turan: Azerbaijan ranks the 129th out of 180 possible in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2020, according to the data released by the international organization Transparency International on January 28, DW reports.
Azerbaijan worsened the result, gaining 30 points out of 100, compared to 2019, according to the organization's report. Azerbaijan shares its place with Russia, Gabon, Malawi and Mali. The index value of 30 points indicates "a very high level of perception of corruption."
The authors of the report note that the situation in the country has been strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the government "is not making enough efforts to effectively combat corruption."
In general, the leaders in terms of positive dynamics in the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia are Georgia (56 points), Armenia (49) and Belarus (47), while Uzbekistan (26), Tajikistan (25) and Turkmenistan (19 points) number of laggards. “The pandemic, unfortunately, is an opportune time for governments prone to corruption,” summarize the authors of the report.
For the authoritarian authorities in the context of the spread of coronavirus, a transparent distribution of medical equipment, as well as masks and vaccines was characteristic.
In 2020, two-thirds of the countries surveyed failed to achieve the required minimum of 50 out of 100 points. In this case, 100 points means absolute purity. "We can say that two-thirds of the world's countries are affected by corruption. In addition, some states at the top of the list make corruption possible in those countries that are at the bottom," said the director of Transparency International. The most typical manifestations of corruption, he said, are still considered bribery, embezzlement and nepotism.
The organization's experts considered Denmark and New Zealand the least corrupt in the perception of the population. They are followed by Finland, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland.
