Elmar Mamedyarov on the visit of Bolton, the CSTO and Karabakh

Baku / 23.10.18 / Turan: The Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea will ensure consistent and safe implementation of oil and gas projects and economic activities at sea. In addition, the Convention establishes territorial waters and fishing zones, to which sovereignty and exclusive rights of coastal states apply, said in an interview with RIA-Novosti the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov.

Soon, the working groups of the littoral countries will hold the first meeting in Baku in order to determine the methodology for establishing the territorial waters of the coastal countries, he noted. On the question of a possible meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia to resolve the Karabakh conflict, Mamedyarov said that Azerbaijan is ready to continue substantive negotiations with a view to a phased settlement of the conflict.

"Baku has repeatedly voiced the position on the need to promote a responsible dialogue aimed at the result - ending the occupation of Azerbaijani territories, creating conditions for the safe return of internally displaced persons, including representatives of the Azerbaijani community of Nagorno-Karabakh, to their homes, followed by ensuring broad rights of self-government for the population of the Nagorno-Karabakh region Azerbaijan, consisting of its Armenian and Azerbaijani communities," said the Foreign Minister.

We hope that the Armenian leadership in the near future will be able to demonstrate the political will to continue the negotiation process within the framework of the existing format and on the basis of a well-known agenda, he added. Referring to the upcoming visit of US Assistant President John Bolton, Mamedyarov noted that the United States is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and one of the three co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, therefore Azerbaijan has a "wide field for dialogue" with Washington.

When asked about the likelihood of Azerbaijan joining the CSTO, Mamedyarov responded evasively that Baku was pursuing a balanced foreign policy and was developing an active bilateral dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation with all the CSTO member states, except Armenia. -02D-
