International tribunal in the Hague launched investigation into Russian war crimes in Ukraine
Kiev/03.03.22/UNIAN: The International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague has opened an investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This was said in a statement by Karim Khan, prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.
He said he had received referrals from 39 countries about the situation in Ukraine that made it possible to launch an investigation into the situation in Ukraine since Nov. 21, 2013, thereby covering the scope of any past or current allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide committed in any part of Ukraine by any person.
"I have notified the ICC leadership of the decision to immediately start active investigation into the situation. Our work to gather evidence has begun," Khan stressed.
He recalled that, as he said in his February 28 statement, a preliminary analysis of the situation in Ukraine showed that crimes under the ICC's jurisdiction might have been committed in Ukraine.
Khan pledged to conduct an objective and independent investigation.--0-
