Khalafov Holds Consultations in Berlin

On Monday in Berlin start political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Germany and Azerbaijan, which will continue until March 14. The Azerbaijani delegation is headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov.

During the visit, he will also hold a series of bilateral meetings, the press service of Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan reported.

Note that the bilateral political consultations are held on the background of criticism from official Baku of the German policy for the past two years. The Azerbaijani authorities are dissatisfied with accusations of human rights violations and lack of democracy on the part of German politicians and the media.

Thus, the government publicly expressed irritation by the statements of the authorized German human rights advocate Marcus Lehning, and accused Germany itself of human rights violations. This line has been picked up by pro-government media and some NGOs.

Additional irritant was the PACE rapporteur on political prisoners Christopher Strasser, whom the Azerbaijani authorities did not allow to visit the country.

In the end, the report by Strasser at the January PACE session in 2013 was not adopted, but by this time the authorities released nearly half of the persons from his list, including 17 "prisoners of conscience" recognized by Amnesty International. -06D-
