Sentence of Avaz Zeynalli - political order

The Chief Editor of Khural, Avaz Zeynalli was sentenced to nine years in prison on a political order based on false accusations. This assessment of the judgment was given yesterday by the representatives of the journalistic community of the country, meeting

at the Institute for Freedom and Safety (IRFS).

During the meeting it was decided to transform the journalists’ preventive response group to the "Committee to Protect Avaz Zeynalli."

The political order of the arrest was confirmed during the trial. Thus, the court did not question the chief witness against the editor, the former Member of Parliament Gular Akhmedova, and her allegations that the editor extorted a bribe from her were not proven.

Other witnesses, who claimed during the investigation that they gave Zeynalli bribes, changed their testimony during the trial.

The participants regarded the verdict as not legal, but a political decision, backed by the head of the Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev, Director of the Publishing House Azerbaijan Agabek Asgarov and the head of the Support Fund Vugar Safarli.

Zeynalli’s arrest is not only a violation of his rights, but also an attack from the authorities on free speech, press, and expression. However, representatives of the independent media shared the view that no pressure will break their will and force them to abandon their principles. -05C06
