Expert: 70-90 Victims of Trafficking Revealed in Azerbaijan Annually
Baku / 30.07.19 / Turan: The fight against trafficking is not limited to eliminating human trafficking, it is also necessary to eliminate the social and economic problems that give rise to this phenomenon. This opinion was expressed in an interview with Turan by the head of the Clean World NGO, Mehriban Zeynalova, on the occasion of the World Day against Trafficking in Persons on July 30.
Among such problems, she pointed out early marriage, domestic violence, gender inequality and discrimination, and restrictions on the education of girls.
The task of the state is to raise public awareness, informing people where to go, when faced with trafficking, and where to get help. For this, the partnership of the state with civil society, the interaction of NGOs and government agencies is important.
According to Zeynalova, the situation in this area is improving in Azerbaijan. She cited as an example a shelter for victims of domestic violence and trafficking at the Clean World NGO.
According to Zeynalova, 70-90 people are recognized as victims of trafficking in Azerbaijan annually. Currently, in Azerbaijan, assistance is provided not only to victims of trafficking, but also to potential victims. The national action plan also covers assistance to migrants, children from sensitive groups, beggars and others.
According to her, foreign experts note the improvement of legislation in the field of combating trafficking, improving the quality of services to victims, and taking preventive measures.
At the same time, Zeynalova expressed regret that the latest report of the US Department of State on the fight against trafficking says about slowing down the work on combating human trafficking in Azerbaijan.
According to her, in Azerbaijan at present, NGOs are involved in the process of combating trafficking and conduct trainings in the regions in target groups. At the same time, work is underway to tighten the penalties for trafficking.
NGOs were involved in discussions on the 4th National Action Plan. The main issue is the provision of a package of services to the victims, including cash payments. This is provided for by the minimum standards defined by the US Department of State. These standards also provide for the creation of victim assistance centers.
Currently, the Ministry of Labor has announced a tender for the creation of support centers for victims in three regions, said Mehriban Zeynalova. -16B06-
