Expert on Outcome of Parliamentary Elections in Turkey
The main outcome of the parliamentary elections in Turkey can be considered as saving the model of democracy, which it has been for a long time. Such an opinion in an interview with the radio Voice of America was expressed by the head of the Caucasian Center for International Relations and Strategic Studies Araz Aslanli.
In addition, for the first time the pro-Kurdish Democratic People Party (HDP), which in fact is a union of six parties, won seats in the parliament by the proportional system.
In addition, for the first time after a long period, MP seats were won by candidates from the non-Muslim minorities, e.g. three ethnic Armenians.
At the same time, the failure of the ruling party Justice and Development, which has lost the ability to form a government alone, will affect the foreign policy of Ankara. In particular, Turkey will be less engaged in the support of certain forces in Iraq and Syria.
Aslanli does not exclude the option of a coalition of minority parties, but the probability of this is very low due to the serious contradictions between them.
The expert did not rule out the possibility of early elections if the coalition is not formed.
Another outcome of the elections was the failure of Erdogan’s idea to make a transition to a presidential republic. -03D06-
