Activists call on Georgian authorities not to extradite Avtandil Mamedov to Azerbaijan

Baku / 19.06.19 / Turan: A group of human rights defenders and representatives of civil society in Azerbaijan appealed to Georgian Prime Minister Mamuk Bakhtadze with request not to extradite activist Avtandil Mamedov arrested on June 17 in Tbilisi.

According to the initiator of the appeal, human rights activist Ogtay Gyulalyev, the appeal stated that Mamedov was persecuted in Azerbaijan because of human rights activities and was forced to seek asylum in Georgia.

Mamedov suffers from hypertension and cerebral circulation, and he has two young children in his care.

It also indicates that by detaining Mamedov, the Georgian authorities violated a number of demands of international conventions on the protection of political prisoners.

On the other hand, if the Azerbaijani authorities had claims to Mamedov, then why they were silent for two years and put him on the wanted list just now?

The authors of the appeal condemn the detention of Mamedov and call on the Georgian authorities not to extradite him to Azerbaijan. They also call on international human rights organizations to defend actively Mamedov.

The appeal reminds that the Georgian authorities have already been subjected to harsh international criticism because of the case of journalist Afgan Mukhtarly, who was abducted in Tbilisi and secretly sent to Azerbaijan, where he was convicted. -06D--
