Committee to Protect Hilal Mamedov appeals to Supreme Court

Yesterday there was a meeting of the Committee to Protect the Rights of the Editor of Tolyshi Sado, Hilal Mamedov, sentenced to 5 years imprisonment.

Due to considering complaints from Mamedov in the Supreme Court on June 25, the Committee decided to appeal to the public and the Supreme Court. Turan was told by the chairwoman of the Committee, co-chair of the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly, Arzu Abdullayeva.

In appeals to the President of the Supreme Court Ramiz Rzayev and judges who will hear the Mamedov case, the authors asked to fairly and objectively consider the complaint from Mamedov.

The Committee also appealed to the public and expressed the innocence of the editor and called to support Mamedov.

The Committee also expressed concern for Mamedov’s health; he suffers from asthma and is at risk of contracting tuberculosis, which is common in Prison Number 17.

In connection with the consideration of the appeal, Mamedov was to be transported to the preliminary investigation jail this week. However, as of June 18, no information of the kind has come.

* Hilal Mamedov was arrested on June 21, 2012 and on September 27, 2013 he was sentenced to five years in prison, found guilty of treason, inciting ethnic hatred and drug trafficking.

However, the local and the international community recognized Mamedov a political prisoner. -06D-
