Emin Huseynov: New Criminal Case against Mehman Huseynov - Provocation
Baku / 26.12.18 / Turan: A blogger, chairman of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety Mehman Huseynov, who is already serving a prison sentence, is facing a new criminal case.
As the Public Relations Department of the Prison Service reported on Wednesday evening, on December 26, in Prison No. 14, during the planned search activities, convict Mehman Huseynov did not obey the lawful demands of the senior inspector of the security department of the institution, Lieutenant Ali Abdalov. "Huseynov committed physical resistance, and, using force against Abdalov, caused him bodily injuries," the report states
In addition, according to the press release, Huseynov scattered objects in the office room and broke them. An ambulance was called to the prison to provide medical care to Abdalov. During the inspection of Huseynov, 461 manat was found at him, the possession of which is prohibited by law. An investigation was started by the Garadagh district prosecutor"s office. A criminal case has been initiated under Article 315.2 (resisting a representative of the authorities with the use of violence dangerous to his health and life) of the Criminal Code, the report says.
Mehman Huseynov's brother, director of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety, Emin Huseynov, called the new criminal case against the blogger a provocation. "We expected there would be a provocation against Mehman. He was warned in the prison that he would not be released at the end of his term in March," E. Huseynov said.
According to him, the blogger was told that a new criminal case would be opened against him because he, speaking at his mother"s grave this summer, accused the ruling regime of her death.
"The accusations are absurd. Who will believe that a prison officer can be beaten in prison? ... They started a criminal case against Mehman, but they didn"t even let the lawyers know. This is an obvious fabrication of the criminal case," Huseynov said.
Note that the blogger's prison term would end on March 2, 2019. However, in the new case he faces up to 7 years in prison.
This is the third case in the past three months, when shortly before the end of the first term political prisoners are being charged with new charges. Earlier, the PFPA activist Mammad Ibrahim and the believer Telman Shiraliyev encountered this.
* Blogger Mehman Huseynov was sentenced in March 2017 to 2 years in prison on defamation charges in connection with a lawsuit against him by Musa Musayev, the head of the Nasimi district police department of Baku. The reason for filing the suit was Huseynov"s allegations of torture at the said institution in January last year.
However, according to human rights activists, the true cause of the persecution of Huseynov was his video reports about the luxury villas of members of the Azerbaijani government and parliament. Amnesty International recognizes Huseynov as a "prisoner of conscience." -03B-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
