Guler Ahmedova: I Could Draw Abdullayev to Justice in France
At today's trial in court for serious crimes the former MP Guler Ahmedova (the defendant) answered the questions from the prosecutor, the lawyer and the judges.
Recall that Guler Ahmedova is accused of fraud and embezzlement in a large scale and harboring serious crime. On both items she faces imprisonment of up to 12 years with confiscation of property.
The reason for the arrest was the video released by the former Rector of the International University Elshad Abdullayev. On these shots taken with a hidden camera, you can see how Ahmedova and her accomplice Sevinj Babaeva extort $ 1 million from Abdullayev for his election as an MP.
October 31, she repeated that she met with Elshad Abdullayev in 2005 on the appeals of his voters - students of the university and their parents. The Rector had deceived these people and they asked to defend their rights, assured Ahmedova.
Then she denied any involvement in sending her accomplice in the Abdullayev case Sevinj Babayeva to Turkey.
After the appearance of the controversial video, she invited Babayeva and offered going to the prosecutor together with her the next day. However, Babayeva, referring to the need for treatment, said she should fly to Turkey.
Ahmedova confirmed that after Babaeva went to Turkey, she talked to her on the phone. In addition, she twice sent money for her treatment. Ahmedova said she did not know about the fact that Babayeva was wanted.
After the appearance of the video Ahmedova suffered a hypertensive crisis and twice tried to kill herself; and so she was not allowed to read local newspapers.
Referring to her attempts to go to Georgia on December 17, 2012, Ahmedova said she was not aware of the ban on her leaving the country. She rejected suggestions that she would abscond. According to her, it would not be treated in Azerbaijan allegedly due to the fact that "she attracted the attention of journalists."
At the same time, Ahmedova refused of the testimony given in Baku Prosecutor as soon as she was not released to Georgia. In this testimony, she stated that she was ready to return Abdullayev 500,000 manats. Today, she stated that she had given the testimony under "powerful psychological pressure."
Ahmedova offered her services to the investigation, to bring Abdullayev to Azerbaijan. She also referred to the "good connections in France," since she for 10 years led an inter-parliamentary friendship group and had personal relations with the former Speaker of the French Senate Christian Poncelet.
"If they called me, I would have caught Abdullaev for libel. In France, these things do not go and they do not blame anyone for a video," said solemnly Ahmedova. Next the hearings of witnesses started. -06C-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
