Human Rights Activists Called for Sanctions against Armenia
Baku/06.07.17/Turan: A group of human rights defenders of Azerbaijan made a statement in connection with the incident on 4 July in the village of Alkhanly of Fizuli region, where a 2-year-old child and her grandmother were killed. "This barbarism is an integral part of the policy of aggression and ethnic cleansing of Armenia conducted against Azerbaijan over 25 years. Armenia and its leadership bear full responsibility for this crime," the statement said. Human rights activists called on the UN and other international organizations to give a political assessment to the serious violations of international humanitarian law by the Armenian Armed Forces, as well as to apply sanctions against Armenia.
The statement recalls that during the period from 1988 to 1993, as a result of the military aggression of Armenia, more than 20,000 Azerbaijanis died, 100,000 were wounded, over 5,000 were captured and disappeared. The statement was signed by 15 people.
On July 4 at 20:40 the village of Alkhanly of Fizuli region was shelled from mortars and grenade launchers. As a result, a 50-year-old Sahiba Guliyeva and her two-year-old granddaughter passed away. Sarvinaz Guliyeva, born in 1965, was wounded with a splinter.

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony. The invitation, delivered by Member of the European Parliament Michael Bloss at the COP29 climate conference, comes as Ibadoglu remains under house arrest and prohibited from leaving Azerbaijan.
