Interior Ministry and Prosecutor"s Office: Hilal Mamedov is Iranian spy
On July 4 the Interior Ministry and Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan were made a joint statement accusing the editor of the newspaper "Tolyshi sado" Hilal Mamedov of spying for Iran, treason and inciting ethnic hatred.
The information reads that Mamedov was arrested on June 21 on the basis of the citizen (whose name is not specified), and the operative information received from the Interior Ministry. According to these reports, Mamedov was attracted to cooperation with the intelligence agency of a foreign country, and carried out the activity against the security and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, as well as incited national, racial and religious hatred.
The investigation revealed that Mamedov was recruited in 1992 by an officer of the Iranian secret service, Abdol Ali oglu Hamzayev. "Taking advantage of the journalist profession and the head of the Cultural Center, Mamedov worked against Azerbaijan in exchange for material compensation," read the news release.
By the order of the Iranian secret services Mamedov collected and transmitted information, established the contacts of carriers of this information with the secret services of IRI, and according to the Interior Ministry and Prosecutor's Office, it is treason.
At the conferences in Iran, in an interview with Iranian television "Seher-2" and in his books Mamedov used disrespectful remarks about the history, culture and traditions of the national minorities, openly inciting inter-ethnic animosity and hatred.
Also, Mamedov was involved in the illegal drug trafficking, and during the arrest, 33,183 gram heroin, computer and other bearers of information were confiscated form him.
Due to the above mentioned, Mamedov was charged under the Articles 274 (treason), 283.2.2 (incitement of ethnic hatred) and 234.4.3 (illegal drug trafficking in large amounts), and the arrest as a preventive measure.
