Movsum Samedov Put in Solitary Confinement Box Again

Serving a prison sentence in Penitentiary No. 12, the leader of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan (IPA) Movsum Samedov has been imprisoned in a solitary confinement box again. This is the third confinement of the sort in March.

According to the lawyer Yalchin Imanov, on 6 March Samedov was put in solitary confinement for five days. At the end of this period, he was imprisoned in the penalty box for three days again.

On the eve of the Novruz holiday Samedov’s family members wanted to meet with him in prison. But they were told Samedov was imprisoned in solitary confinement for two months this time.

According to the lawyer, in the Penitentiary Code the maximum term of imprisonment in a solitary confinement box is 15 days.

Imanov said that because of the long vacation on the occasion of the Novruz holiday, he will be able to meet Samedov and clarify the circumstances of his punishment on or after March 27.

The lawyer believes that provocations are committed against Samedov to justify his re-direction into the Gobustan prison with a more severe detention regime.

Our attempts to get comments from the Prison Service have failed.

Samedov was arrested along with a group of other activists of IPA in January 2011 on charges of attempting to seize power and illegal weapons possession and sentenced to 12 years in prison. The European Court has already started communication concerning his complaint. -06B-
