New Project to Support Mine Victims

During the period from 1992 in Azerbaijan, mines affected more than 3,000 people, of whom about 500 were killed. This was announced by the head of ANAMA (Azerbaijan Agency for Mine Action) Nazim Ismailov at today's signing ceremony at the beginning of the third phase of the project: "Training on small businesses and micro-credit funds for victims of mines in Azerbaijan."

In particular, they signed a memorandum of understanding between ANAMA and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as well as an agreement between the UNDP and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

According to Ismailov, 40 micro-credits are expected to clear mines from the Aghjabadi, Beylagan, Imishli, Saatli and Bilasuvar regions. The project's duration is 15 months.

According to the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Antonius Broek, the signed document covers a new stage of cooperation and provides expansion of the capabilities of ANAMA.

In addition to providing loans for the victims, trainings will be held on business organization, marketing, accounting, etc. The aid in the amount of 135,000 dollars will be used by approximately 160 people. The contractor of the project is the NGO Chirag. -16D06 -
