PFPA Activist Sentenced to Six Years Imprisonment
Baku / 13.09.18 / Turan: The verdict was read out at the Baku Grave Crimes Court today on the trial of the youth activist of the Popular Front Party Orkhan Bakhyshly, accused of drug trafficking on a large scale. The court deprived him of his freedom for 6 years.
Earlier, the prosecutor offered to convict him to 7 years imprisonment. The defense asked to justify Bakhyshly.
Recall that Bakhyshly was detained on May 6 and the police allegedly found 6 grams of heroin on him. The activist rejected the accusations and said the police officers had planted the drugs to him.
A few days before the arrest, on May 3, at an event on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, at the journalist Elmar Huseynov"s grave, Bakhyshly accused the country"s authorities of the journalist"s murder. In the opinion of his colleagues, this was the reason for his arrest. Human rights activists recognize Bakhyshly as a political prisoner. -B06--
