Powers of another Well-Known Lawyer Suspended
Baku / 22.01.18 / Turan: The Presidium of the Azerbaijan Bar Association suspended the powers of the well-known lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev for one year.
This decision was taken by the Presidium at a meeting without Mekhtiyev's participation on January 22.
The lawyer is punished for the media publication of an interview with his client, former head of the International Bank of Azerbaijan Jahangir Hajiyev, sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Another lawyer for Hajiyev, Agil Lahyjov, was reprimanded.
It should be noted that in an interview with www.ovqat.com in September 2017, Hajiyev criticized the government's policy towards banks and entrepreneurship, and in particular spoke sharply about the Finance Minister Samir Sharifov.
The lawyers were punished on the recommendation of First Deputy Prosecutor General Rustam Usubov.
Mehdiyev considers the decision of the Presidium of the Bar Association against him and his colleague unreasonable. Mehdiyev will appeal against the decision to suspend his powers for a period of one year.
"I am accused of broadcasting Hajiyev's interview to the media, but there is nothing illegal in this," as he faced accusations and insults and had the right to reply to them.
Mehdiyev is the defender of the rights of many political prisoners, including the leader of the Muslim Unity Movement Taleh Bagirzadeh, deputy chairman of the Popular Front Party Fuad Gahramanli, another activist of this party Asif Yusifli, and the brother-in-law of the opposition leader Ali Kerimli, Elnur Seyidov.
Earlier, in November 2017, the Presidium of the Bar Association decided to terminate the powers of another prominent lawyer Yalchin Imanov.
Other prominent lawyers known for their participation in the defense of political prisoners, Khalid Bagirov, Alaif Hasanov, Elchin Namazov and others, were also expelled from the Bar in recent years. -06D--
