The private sector"s development, the expectation of a pre-New Year"s rise in prices, and a look at the activities of the Ombudsman institution are the leading topics of today"s press.
The newspaper Azerbaijan writes that the main investor of the country is the private sector, development of which is a priority of the state.
Over the past 10 years, the state has allocated preferential loans to the private sector for a total of more than AZN 2 billion. According to official statistics, for 10 months of 2017 the share of the non-state sector in industry was 80.2%.
The newspaper Echo published an article about the forthcoming increase in prices for food. The material is called: Store Your Food Products Now.
In the near future, prices for meat, fish, citrus fruits and even cereals are expected to rise. Before the New Year there is less than a month. If you buy basic non-perishable products for at least two weeks, you can save a decent amount.
In early 2018, prices will begin to fall. Of course, the cost of some foods will not change, but prices for basic goods will decline until mid-February.
Of course, this will take place, if there are no unexpected surprises from the Tariff Council and the Central Bank of Azerbaijan.
The Novoye Vremya newspaper has published a critical article about the activity of the Ombudsman.
To put it mildly, the current Ombudswoman poorly fulfills her duties to protect human rights in Azerbaijan, and this institution requires radical reforms.
The issue of election of the Ombudsman will not be submitted for consideration at the forthcoming session of the Parliament. It is expected that the project will be issued in 2018. The term of the current Ombudswoman, 80-year-old Elmira Suleymanova, expired in March this year. -0----

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
