Press Review for 20/08/2016

New intrigue of the authorities about the alleged connection of the Azerbaijani opposition with Gulen supporters, continuing arrests of political activists, and Azerbaijan’s relations with Western countries are the main themes of the press.

The official newspaper Azerbaijan published an article entitled Azerbaijan to Provide Outlet to Persian Gulf, which speaks of the importance of the Baku meeting of the Presidents of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia and the transport project North-South.

The author writes that the project, as well as the project of the Southern Gas Corridor, will provide Azerbaijan stability and prosperity, as well as make it an important partner in the region.

Thus, Azerbaijan will provide access of Europe and Russia to the Persian Gulf and on to India.

The Azadlig newspaper publishes an appeal of PFPA on the arrest of its activist Fouad Ahmadli, calling it the authorities’ "dirty provocation" to discredit the party and its leader Ali Kerimli.

The authorities' actions were caused by PFPA plans to organize protests against the establishment of a monarchy in the country.

PFPA believes this repression will not end, but PFPA does not intend to give up, despite all the difficulties, and it calls on the international community to support the democratic forces in Azerbaijan.

Echo publishes an article about the level of social welfare, where it is said that only 12% of the citizens belong to the middle class. The growth of this category of persons is very slow.

Prior to the first devaluation of the manat in February last year, the middle class was significantly higher - 20%, the expert Nariman Agayev says. It means the class of people who have an apartment, a vehicle, and a monthly income of AZN 1,000 per family member.

The annual income of such a family is 48 thousand manats.

The expert considers rich those whose income exceeds 100 thousand manats, which is 3% of the population.

Yeni Musavat

It publishes a variety of opinions on the new wave of repression in Azerbaijan in the light of how it will affect Azerbaijan's relations with the West.

The US and UK have already expressed concern about the arrest of political and civil society activists. Experts believe that the new arrests will again worsen the West's attitude towards Azerbaijan and actualize the topic of sanctions against public officials who violate freedom and human rights in Azerbaijan.
