Prosecutor decided to forgive half a million?
Baku /18.10.19 / Turan: Closing speeches were made at the Baku Serious Crimes Court in the case of appropriation of 564 thousand manats at the Lyceum of the Caspian Secondary School LLC.
The accused in the case are two accountants of the lyceum - Tural Mammadov and Faraim Mohalyev. They were arrested based on a complaint by the founder of the Lyceum, Sona Velieva, the wife of Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Ali Hasanov, and charged under the Article 179.4 of the Criminal Code (large assignment).
Throughout the trial, the defendants insisted on summoning Sona Velieva to court, but this was not done. When the judge announced the completion of the judicial investigation, both accused went on hunger strike in protest against the objective trial.
At today's meeting, the prosecutor asked the court to sentence Mammadov and Mohalyev to six years on probation.
According to the prosecution, in April-October 2018, 1 million 366 thousand manat was paid for training 454 students. However, the chief accountant and accountant appropriated 564 thousand manats from the indicated amount, without entering them into the reports.
The chief accountant Mammadov partially pleaded guilty, saying that he had taken money for personal needs, but not 564 thousand, but 350 thousand manats. According to him, the founder Velieva invited him to take on the full amount, promising not to complain to the police. "Believing her, I wrote an explanatory letter and asked to give me a year to return the money," Mammadov said in court.
Mohalyev pleaded not guilty.
Under this article, imprisonment of up to 7 years is supposed. One can only guess why suddenly the investigation decided to soften their position. -21C-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
