Baku/08.08.22/Turan: On August 8, Shiites around the world celebrate Ashura. This is the peak of the mourning month of Muharram. On this day in 680, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad Ali Hussein was killed in an unequal battle in the steppe near the city of Karbala.

The cause of the tragedy was a power struggle between the followers of Prophet Muhammad. At the same time, the struggle between Shiites and Sunnis for influence in the Islamic world was laid.

In Azerbaijan, where Shiites traditionally predominate, Ashura is widely celebrated. On this day, mourning ceremonies are held in all mosques, where Imam Hussein is mourned. The shahsay-vakhsay ceremony, an action of self–flagellation, is also held. Besides, blood donation is carried out by believers, which symbolizes the bloodshed of innocent victims in the steppes of Karbala. -05D-
