State Commission on POWs Seeks 416 Armenians

On Tuesday, the Ministry of National Security held a meeting of the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons, with the participation of representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the OSCE and the Council of Europe.

Secretary of the State Commission Shaheen Sayilov said that according to recent studies, 553 captured Azerbaijani’s were killed or died.

The ICRC has record of one Azerbaijani prisoner currently held in Yerevan, soldier Faradzhev Firuz Mirza Oglu. According to the Armenian side, he refuses to return to his homeland.

He reported that of 1,042 citizens of Azerbaijan released from captivity, 31 had been arrested for crimes.

Armenian special services actively use Azerbaijani prisoners and hostages in reconnaissance and sabotage activities against Azerbaijan, carried out with the help of their terrorists and other hostile acts. It was disclosed that 107 people were involved in secret cooperation while in captivity. Most of them were not held criminal responsible, as they had not committed any hostile acts.

The fate of 1,045 people has recently been clarified - 386 of them are still alive, 312 were killed in fighting and buried, 332 names were on the list again, and 15 were lost outside the conflict zone. There were cases recorded of persons lost in fighting - 147 people, although the Commission did not receive calls from their relatives.

The State Commission believes that 4,031 people are missing, 877 people were captured, including 22 children, 99 women and 133 elderly people, but the Armenian side hides it.

Based on the testimony of Azerbaijani citizens released from captivity, the list of the people was specified as well as places of their captivity and other facts. Despite the evidence, the Armenian side continues to deny the fact that these people are in captivity.

From 2004-2012, 22 people were released, due to the mediation efforts of the ICRC. The State Commission keeps focus on the search for 416 missing Armenians, as listed by the ICRC. It found that 27 of them were lost not in Azerbaijan’s territory of Azerbaijan, rather, 25 people were found in Armenia, and two in Georgia. -02D-
