U.S. Embassy Celebrated Ramadan

The U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Azerbaijan Adam Sterling held an Iftar dinner in his residence yesterday to mark the completion of Ramadan.

"It is an honor to organize the Iftar. This ceremony is my favorite event among those that are held annually by our embassy,"said Sterling, addressing the guests, who included members of the clergy, the Parliament, the public and the diplomatic corps.

The U.S. embassy holds an annual Iftar in deference to the fasting Muslims in Azerbaijan. "During Ramadan, we witness initiation to religious traditions. At this ceremony, we see a dialogue, common thought and mutual respect between religious communities in Azerbaijan," said the diplomat.

The same evening Ramadan dinners were conducted in all the Muslim countries after the main ceremony of Iftar at the White House. Last week, President Obama, receiving guests on the occasion of Ramadan, said that the U.S. should continue to be a country, not just tolerant to people of different backgrounds and beliefs, but enriched by this diversity of people treating each other with respect and dignity.

"We have to be America that is moving forward, as a family, as well as the preceding generation, mobilizing in times of trial, staying true to their core values and becoming stronger. This is our nature, and we have to keep it forever," Obama said.

The ninth month of the Muslim calendar, Ramadan came on July 21 and will end on August 19 in the evening with a gala dinner. In Azerbaijan, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan is celebrated on August 19-21.

Ramadan is the most important and honorable to the Muslims and has sacred significance. It is a month of fasting and worship, in which the Qur'an was revealed, a month in which evil forces are chained, and a month of remission of sins.

The Ramadan fasting is intended to increase piety, temper the inner world in the struggle with weaknesses and passions, to re-estimate the value of existing benefits and improve treatment for those in need and the surrounding people. During the holiday it is usual to treat not only the family, but also neighbors and friends (regardless of their religion). -0 –
