Mountaineers Ready to Storm the Pamir Giant

Four climbers from Azerbaijan - Sirkhan Mamedov, Firuz Dadashev, Rufat Gojayev and Denis Leusov are preparing to storm the highest mountain of the Pamirs, Somoni Peak (formerly Communism Peak - 7,495 m.)

 

The ascent began three days ago. On August 16 the crew left the base camp at 4,500 meters above the sea level, and crossed the Walter Glacier at an altitude of 5,300 meters, where they installed their first intermediate camp.
 
On August 17 at noon the four cliffhangers got to the Big Pamir Plateau, crossed it and set the second intermediate camp at the foot of Dushanbe Peak (6,100 meters).
 
The climbers’ conditions are good and the weather is favorable, although sometimes it snows. According to the plan, on August 18, the team will continue to climb. The summit attempt is appointed on August 19, the President of the Azerbaijani Mountaineering Federation Israfil Ashurlu told Turan.
