Yerevan Refused Israeli Weapons: Too Expensive
Armenia does not need Israeli weapons, similar to what was proposed to Baku, as they are too expensive. According to Deputy Defense Minister David Tonoyan, the Armenians replace drones by grenade launchers.
Yerevan rejected Tel Aviv’s offer to purchase Israeli weapons, said First Deputy Defense Minister David Tonoyan. According to him, the republic has access to the world market weapons trade, but there are some political restrictions imposed by the EU countries and the USA related to the reluctance to promote the growth of military capabilities in the Karabakh conflict zone, said RIA Novosti.
"So to speak, there is a gentleman's agreement not to supply weapons to conflict regions. Naturally, on the basis of need, weapons are purchased in other countries that do not have such restrictions. The same Israel has offered us weapons similar to those sold to Azerbaijan. We refused, because we did not see the need for it. We found other solutions, and you can see these types of weapons are not so successful. E.g. a civilian bus could be destroyed by a simple grenade launcher, and the use of a drone for this cost several hundred thousand. This says a lot," the Armenian Deputy Minister was quoted by RIA Novosti.
Apparently, Tonoyan means the Washington Post video published last week. It was shot in the area of fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh. An Israeli UAV Harop is allegely seen there at the time of its collapse, or attack. According to the Armenian Ministry of Defense, the UAV directed by Azerbaijani military fell on a bus with "Armenian volunteers", which killed 7 people.
As reported by the portal IzRus, the Armenian Ambassador to Egypt and Israel Armen Melkonyan arrived in Jerusalem late last week to convey a note of protest to the Israeli Foreign Ministry. The document, which was received by the head of Eurasia Department Dan Oriyan, requires to stop supplying weapons to Azerbaijan, as they are eventually used in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. -02D-
