Chairman of the Russian Union of Azerbaijani Organizations, Abbas Abbasov, made today a surprisingly sharp statement: "I want some politicians, political scientists, experts and journalists in Azerbaijan are responsible for those countrymen who live outside their historic homeland. Stop playing the fates of people who left Azerbaijan for different reasons, and have found refugee in other countries, particularly in Russia! Do you think what will be the fate of our compatriots due to your filthy and foul-smelling campaign against the Russian Federation?” reads the statement.

The preliminary report into the late December crash of an Azerbaijani passenger jet in Kazakhstan is a masterwork in delicate diplomacy, breaking no new ground in assigning responsibility for the tragedy, yet appearing to confirm that the plane was accidentally shot down by Russian air defenses without explicitly saying so. As such, the Kazakh-produced report has avoided, at least initially, provoking the ire of either Russia or Azerbaijan.
