If Armenia abandons the Zangezur corridor, communications will be laid through Iran - Erdogan
Baku/26.09.23/Turan: If Armenia abandons the Zangezur Corridor project, transport communications will be laid through Iran, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today.
According to him, the Zangezur corridor will become the second transport artery of global cargo transportation in the East-West direction through the South Caucasus after Baku-Tbilisi-Kars.
It will be laid in any case, but what its route will be now depends on the political will of Armenia, the Turkish president noted.
Initially, it was planned that the route would run between the western regions of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic along the shortest route - through the territory of Armenia.
However, for some reason Armenia decided that such a corridor would serve as an obstacle to its trade contacts with Iran.
The Turkish President noted that in this case, if Armenia refuses to participate in the creation of transport routes, it can pass through the territory of Iran – this will lengthen it a little, but not so much that it becomes an obstacle to its construction.
"Iran is positive about this, so a path through Iran to Azerbaijan can be created," Erdogan said.
It should be noted that there are already agreements between Baku and Tehran on the construction of a highway to Nakhchivan along the border. ---06B---
