Erdogan makes another step towards absolute power
On 13 January the Turkish MPs approved the main provisions of the constitutional reform, strengthening the role of the president, Reuters reported. Three new Articles of the main document provide that the Parliament will now have an oversight role, and the president will be able to keep the party membership and lead the executive branch. "For" vote 340 deputies out of 550. Amendment must pass two more rounds of voting, after which they will put to a popular referendum.
The amendments approved on January 13 are part of the reform, the discussion of the remaining provisions is ongoing. The new draft constitution, for the adoption of which advocates Recep Tayyip Erdogan, provides a sharp increase of presidential powers.
In the case of adoption of the document armed forces and intelligence agencies will be directly in subordination of the president. Currently, their activity is regulated by a collective body - the Supreme Military Council. -02D-
