20 years without Aghdam region

20 years ago, on July 23, Armenian troops occupied Aghdam city in Karabakh. The city was seized after a massive attack that continued for almost a month.

Aghdam is a strategic point in the low-lying Karabakh region, which is located close to the administrative border of the former Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous District.

In summer 1992, Armenia took advantage of the difficult political situation in Azerbaijan caused by the  mutiny  in Ganja city of colonel Suret Huseynov.

Russian troops helped the Armenian army to seize Aghdam.

The city was completely destroyed and it still lies in ruins.

About 25,000 houses, 50 industrial and construction enterprises, 160 schools, 374 cultural institutions, 2 museums and historical and cultural monuments have been destroyed.

About 70% of territory of the region is occupied. Only 10 out of 122 settlements in Aghdam region are controlled by Azerbaijan.—0—
