At the Tehran summit Azerbaijan will be represented by Ambassador for Special Issues

On August 28-29, an Azerbaijani delegation headed by the Ambassador for Special Issues, Yashar Aliyev, will visit Tehran to take part in the meeting of Foreign Ministers of the countries-members of Non-Aligned Movement, reads the information of the press service of the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan.

Earlier, official Tehran persistently invited the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to the summit. Prior to the summit, Deputy Foreign Minister, Seyid Abbas Araghchi, was sent to Baku.

Such a low participation of Azerbaijan at the summit is another indication of bilateral relations recently.

Tension has been observed since the beginning of the year, when Baku and Tehran accused each other of preparing terrorist acts on the territory of Azerbaijan and Iran.

The situation aggravated on the eve of the "Eurovision" contest in May in Baku, when Iran began to stage protests and make insulting remarks against leaders of Azerbaijan in connection with an alleged planned gay-parade.

The two Azerbaijani writers  were detained in Iran.

In response, pickets in front of the Iranian Embassy, with abusive posters of Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei were organized in Baku. After that, the Iranians deliberately withdrew their ambassador in Baku. -03B-

Who Represents Azerbaijan in the Non-Aligned Movement's Summit?

Tehran is holding the 16th NAM summit of heads of state and government from 120 countries. The summit opened on Sunday with consulting experts.

Iranian media report that Tehran intends to use the summit to protest with anti-globalization forces against U.S. hegemony. Iran also wants to present its plan to resolve the Syrian crisis and save the Assad regime.

The visit to Tehran of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was not supported by the U.S. and Israel, which have taken steps to thwart this anti-West summit.

The event is ignored "for reasons of health" by the Turkish President Abdullah Gul. The Russian President Vladimir Putin did not go to Tehran due to "busy work schedule" and the U.S. allies in the Gulf pointedly ignored the meeting.

Ilham Aliyev did not go to the summit for unnamed reasons. On Friday, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in Baku to persuade him to attend the summit, but Aliyev was said not to be in Baku for "family reasons."

Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry could not yet name the person representing the country at the summit, promising to clarify this issue later.

Thus, Tehran's attempts to use the summit to resolve "misunderstandings" in the Azerbaijani-Iranian relations have failed.

Azerbaijan, which came into NAM just a year ago, yet was on the side of the critics of the Iranian regime.

Tehran in the face of serious political change in the Third World will hardly garner the support of New Democracy - Egypt, Iraq, and Libya.

Iran can only count on the solidarity of countries such as Cuba, Venezuela and Belarus.-0-
