Dunja Mijatovic to Be Replaced by Harlem Desire
Baku / 17.07.17 / Turan: The French diplomat Harlem Desire will become the new OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, who will succeed Dunja Mijatovic in this post, Turan reports with reference to AFP.
Desire's candidacy was approved by the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurtz. On July 18, Desire's appointment will be officially formalized.
The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) welcomed this appointment and Desire's statement that he will actively promote "the realization of fundamental freedoms enshrined in the principles and commitments of the OSCE, in particular freedom of expression and freedom of the media".
"Over the past decade, journalists have continued to be victims of verbal and physical threats and attacks. Some of them have been tortured, and many have been harassed because of their professional activities, and several people died during their work," Desire said.
Prior to this appointment Desire held the post of Secretary of State for European Affairs of the French Foreign Ministry. -06D-
