ECHR started communication in ten more cases from Azerbaijan
Baku / 09.10.18 / Turan: The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has commissioned five more cases from Azerbaijan to communicate. The interests of the applicants at the ECHR are represented by counsel, Javad Javadov. Two of the applicants, Zulfugar Mikailov and Elman Agayev, were arrested in connection with the Nardaran events of 2015 and were subsequently sentenced to 17 and 13 years in prison, respectively. Their complaint is related to unlawful pre-trial arrest. The complaint of an activist of the Karabakh Liberation Organization Vugar Aliyev is connected with his conviction on charges of illegal possession of weapons. Former head of the education department of Kalbajar region, Mohammed Bagirov, was imprisoned for 10 years on charges of abuse of office. He complains that during the pre-trial investigation, he was accused of violating a non-exit subscription and detained, although he did not violate the measure of restraint. Finally, the fifth applicant is Nazim Agabekov, brother-in-law of the head of Meydan.TV Emin Milli. He was arrested in July 2015, and in April 2016 he was sentenced to three years in prison on probation for drug trafficking. Agabekov was recognized as a political prisoner.
In addition, the ECHR commenced communication on the complaint of human rights activist VidadiIskenderli, who after his arrest in 2011 was held for some time in a non-ventilated cell designed for two people along with seven other detainees.Iskenderli was arrested in April 2011 on charges of obstructing electoral rights with the use of violence and forceful interference with the work of election commissions.He received three years in prison. However, at the end of 2012 he was pardoned.
The ECHR also addressed the government of Azerbaijan in the case of the former manager of the president, AkifMuradverdiyev, who was arrested in 2013 on smuggling charges.He challenges the lawfulness of his arrest and search of the apartment, as well as interrogation without a lawyer.Communication has also been initiated on the affairs of DashgynMikayilov, TuralSafarov and Mansur Heydarzade.
The complaints raise issues of violation of the rights of applicants guaranteed by Article 3 (inadmissibility of torture), Article5 (the right to liberty and security of person),Article 6 (the right to a fair trial), Article8 (respect for privacy) of the European Convention. - 06D--

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today issued five rulings on applications from Azerbaijan. The case of "Afgan Mammadov v. Azerbaijan" concerned the complainant's exclusion from the Bar Association. Mammadov was expelled based on a complaint filed by a colleague, which he considered unjust. The ECHR ruled that Mammadov's rights had been violated and ordered Azerbaijan to pay him €5,000 in compensation for moral damage and €1,000 to cover legal costs.

During the ongoing COP29 climate conference in Baku on November 14, a group of activists staged a protest condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The activists also denounced countries that supply oil and weapons to nations waging aggressive wars. The protest featured placards with slogans such as: "From fossil fuels to peace!", "End war crimes!", "Punish the aggressor!", and "Phase out fossil fuel use to achieve peace!" among others.
