Ilgar Mammadov Addressed to International Community from Jail

"From my prison cell I am looking with a special feeling at the international community's attempts to flirt with the Azerbaijani stupid dictatorship that brazenly challenges the world community and its citizens." This is in the open letter from the arrested leader of the Republican Alternative (REAL) Ilgar Mammadov.

Ironically, in 20 minutes after the authorities of Azerbaijan celebrated their victory in the PACE, when thanks to Russian MPs and bribed or deceived MPs from Europe, the resolution on political prisoners was rejected, in Ismayilli there were serious clashes that led to the expansion of the circle of political prisoners in Azerbaijan, further noted Mammadov.

Authorities brought charges against Mammadov due to these clashes for his short-term trip to Ismayilli, in between the collisions that lasted two days between the people and the police.

The purpose of the trip was to assess the situation on the ground and bring it to the public. "Now the authorities have accused me of the organization of a sudden, and, unfortunately, violent protest against corruption," said Mammadov.

He expressed gratitude to all international organizations, the EU and prominent politicians, who immediately called his arrest a politically motivated one and demanded his release.

Next Mammadov reported on his activities over the last year, which troubled "dictator Aliyev."
In particular, this regards the fact that the American press and Radio Liberty identified offshore companies belonging to Aliyev and his family in Azerbaijan and abroad.

After that, Aliev amended legislation that now allows him to create a private property for the assigned oil money, not registering a company abroad, but doing it in the country.

REAL’s attempt to hold a picket in front of the parliament playing the role of a notary office was stopped by police.

Because Mammadov compared the parliament with a menagerie of a medieval sultan, were those unwanted by the ruler are thrown, one of the members of parliament, a former police officer and the brother of a General, Adil Aliyev threatened to cut off his head. Another 40 deputies were preparing to sue Mammadov.

But suddenly the campaign was suspended after the Vice President of European Commission Nellie Kroes expressed her view in relation to this at the Global Internet Forum in Baku.

Next Mammadov said that on January 12 he took part in the protest against the non combat deaths in the army, which has become the most massive tragic event in recent years. This protest was a lot of pressure on the government and became a great moral victory.

"After this demonstration, I felt the authorities' plans to arrest me," then said Mammadov.

He further pointed out on his visit to Ismayilli and recalled a previous trip to Guba, where there were riots 11 months ago. Mammadov said that even then he predicted distribution of the tension to other regions. The Ismayilli events confirmed these observations.

"By the way, I was in Ismayilli less than 2 hours, and in the late afternoon, when the situation was relatively calm," wrote Mammadov.

After 5 days, Mammadov posted on his blog the information that "finally angered the government." This information refuted the words of the chief executive of the area, who said that the ignited hotel does not belong to him or his family.

However Mammadov published papers on the hotel belonging to Vugar Alekperov, the nephew of the chief executive of the district and the son of the Minister of Labor Fizuli Alekperov.

The next day the prosecutor told Mammadov about revealing the facts of his involvement in the unrest, and after a further 5 days, he was arrested on the basis of false witnesses from two people. Now he faces seven years in prison.

Mammadov stressed that he was arrested 5 days before his official presidential nomination was scheduled.

Mammadov further noted that during the past 15 years he had met with many Western politicians - presidents, prime ministers, senators, congressmen, European parliamentarians, ministers, and party leaders, spoke at conferences, made efforts to contribute to the European integration of Azerbaijan, and to achieve the democratization of the country and the peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict.

"As a result of the struggle for these purposes at the time of expansion of REAL and its gaining a new momentum and before the announcement of the nomination of my candidacy for president, the dictatorial regime of Azerbaijan put me in jail," said his statement at the end. -06D-
