Ivanishvili and Saakashvili decide to lead Georgia into NATO together
Tbilisi hosted the first meeting after the elections of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and Bijna Ivanishvili, a leader of the coalition of "Georgian Dream". Following the meeting, the two sides confirmed that Georgia will move closer to NATO and the EU. "In this respect our views coincide. Our strategy is European and Euro-Atlantic integration," said Ivanishvili, who must take the post of Prime Minister of Georgia.
According to him, the strategy of "Georgian Dream" coincides with the strategy of the former government and will continue in the future. Ivanishvili also announced that Georgia will join NATO. Saakashvili said that Georgia is currently the "historical process" of transference of power to the opposition in a democratic way.
"We are passing peacefully most of the features that is made for the first time in this region. Georgian people have made a choice, and we respect the choice of our people," Saakashvili said. According to him, the party has some "fundamental differences with opponents," but "we need to preserve democracy and to ensure that in future elections were democratic." The opposition won more than 54% of the vote in the parliamentary elections on October 1. Saakashvili's supporters won more than 40%. Now a parliamentary majority must form a Cabinet of Ministers and approve the candidacy of the prime minister, proposed by the president.
On Monday, Ivanishvili announced the makeup of his new government. At the same time earlier, Saakashvili said that he would submit to parliament that candidate of the prime minister, which will be proposed by a new majority in Parliament. -02D-
