Mitt Romney Chooses Pro-Armenian Politician Candidate for Vice-President
On 11 August, Mitt Romney put forward a candidate for U.S. vice presidential office - Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), which upset the Azerbaijani and Turkish Diaspora lobbies.
Thus, 42-year-old Ryan was one of the most active lobbyists, and even co-authored the bill HR 252 of 2007 on the recognition of "Armenian genocide". Over the past 10 years, Ryan has repeatedly raised the issue of recognizing the "Armenian genocide" before the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama. It is no accident that the Armenian National Council of America welcomed the selection of Romney.
Apparently, the Azerbaijani and Turkish lobby in the coming three months before the presidential election will seek to strengthen ties with the Obama administration.
But American experts specializing in the region believe that in the current situation neither the Democrats nor the administration itself will show interest in such bonds. So, the Obama administration in recent years has repeatedly criticized the official Baku and Ankara for violation of freedom of the press and pressure on civil society activists.
“Without significant steps in this regard, it is impossible either to win long-term sympathy of the current administration, or to strengthen its position in the elections,” one of the American experts in elections told Turan.
Progress in the fight against terrorism and the Arab revolutions of the last two years that overthrew authoritarian rulers are likely to be used by the Democrats in the coming three months as a major trump card in the election campaign, he said.
In general, the nomination of Ryan as candidate for Vice-President has caused concern among both liberals and conservatives in the U.S. -25C-
