Muzhnieks sends comments to the ECHR for Mammadli and R.Jafarov
Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muzhnieks sent to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) observations for two other prisoners in Azerbaijan - Anar Mammadov and human rights activists Rasul Jafarov.
The statement the office of European Commissioner sent to the Turan, said that the head of the Center for Elections Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center (EMDSC) Anar Mammadov is the most professional in Azerbaijan organizer of the election monitoring. He regularly informed the Council of Europe on the situation in Azerbaijan's human rights.
The Commissioner is concerned that the arrest of is Mammadov associated with his awareness of human rights violations and the attempt to prevent monitoring of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan.
In connection with Rasul Jafarov, the Commissioner indicates the refusal of the Azerbaijani authorities to register Human Rights Club, headed by Jafarov.
Muzhnieks believes that the cases of Mammadov and Jafarov are vivid examples of repression in Azerbaijan against those who cooperate with the Council of Europe and other international institutions on human rights issues. Muzhnieks believes that the crackdown on civil society makes it difficult to work in the field of human rights.
"This persecution must be stopped immediately, and arrested for their views and legitimate civilian activities should be released," emphasizes the commissioner.
Anar Mammadov was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison on charges of misappropriation, abuse of office, tax evasion, official forgery and illegal business.
Jafarov is charged under the same articles and now the court against him continues. Both have been recognized by the “Amnesty International” as “prisoners of conscience.” Muzhnieks previously sent to the Strasbourg Court remarks on human rights defenders Hilal Mammadov, Intigam Aliyev, Leyla and Arif Yunus. The nature and purpose of such comments is to accelerate the process of consideration of these cases to the European Court of Human rights.-16D-
