NATO to accept Ukraine and Georgia - Stoltenberg
Baku/14.01.22/Turan: The North Atlantic Alliance has decided on the membership of Ukraine and Georgia. The Russian Federation has no right to interfere in the issue. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this in an interview with the newspaper La Repubblica.
"Ukraine has already applied for membership, and we decided to work on the issue by supporting its reforms, helping to modernize its armed forces to comply with our standards.
In 2008, we decided that Ukraine and Georgia would become members of NATO; however, we did not specify when exactly," the Secretary General of the Alliance said.
At the same time, he pointed out that only Ukraine could decide whether it would join NATO or not, while Moscow had no right to interfere in the matter.
"At the moment, the reform agenda is about helping Ukraine. I repeat: the issue is in the Russian aggression. They occupied a part of Ukraine - Crimea, control Donbass with the support of separatists, and then they want to force us to accept a legally binding treaty violating the national sovereignty," summed up the NATO secretary general. -02D-
