Program of Angela Merkel's Visit to Azerbaijan
Baku / 24.08.18 / Turan: Negotiations of German Chancellor Angela Merkel with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku will begin on Saturday morning, August 25.
As the source in the German government told Turan, negotiations between the leaders of the two countries, their joint press conference and lunch will be held from 10:15 to 13:10. Then Merkel will visit the Alley of Martyrs, where the victims of the entry of Soviet troops in January 1990 and the participants of the Karabakh war are buried.
From 14:10 to 15:00 Merkel will attend a round table on economic issues with the participation of business circles, after which, she will leave for Berlin.
According to the same source, Merkel intends to discuss the development of bilateral economic relations in Baku and the development of relations between Azerbaijan and the EU.
As for the issue of human rights, Merkel has traditionally touched upon human rights, democracy and the rule of law in negotiations with foreign partners, a source in the German government said, calling the "release" of the oppositionist Ilgar Mammadov on August 13 a "positive sign".
In addition, Merkel will focus on the implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor in the context of diversifying the sources of energy supplies to Europe during the visit to Baku.
Merkel will also touch the Karabakh settlement. "Germany, along with partners from the EU, supports the holding of negotiations within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group and the participation of the EU Special Representative in the South Caucasus.
