The European Parliament adopts a directive on the confiscation of criminal assets

The European Parliament adopted a directive on the confiscation of assets from criminal activities. The Directive adopted on Tuesday allows Member States to confiscate illegally acquired property, even if it is not directly linked to a specific crime. The directive also helps to confiscate the property transferred to third parties.
Provisions of the directive relate to the freezing of assets in cases where there is no sentence because of the death of the suspected, escape or a long illness. Regarding the use of confiscated property, it will be transferred to the public and social purposes.
The European Commissioner for Justice, commenting on the vote in parliament said, "This is good news for the citizens and the economy." Cecilia Malmström emphasized that the new law will help police in the fight against organized criminal groups.
The real property and bank accounts of many of the oligarchs from CIS countries, including Azerbaijan, are in Europe, and may fall within the scope of this directive. -02D-
