Arrest of Jabrayil "Prisoners of Light" Prolonged

Baku / 12.05.17 / Turan: On 11 May, the Nasimi district court extended for a month the arrest of five displaced people from the Jabrayil district, arrested for participating in the protest against electricity cut-offs in refugee towns in the Bilasuvar district.

As lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan, the decision will be appealed.

December 22, 2016 in 11 settlements of internally displaced persons protests took place against electricity cut-off due to the debts of the population.

The action was dispersed by the police and five members, Jalal Guliyev, Zaur Feyruz, Gyulaga Almammadov, Ulvi Guliyev and Ilkin Iskenderov were arrested, charged with riots, destruction of property of others and violence against the police.

The defense considers the accusations unfounded, and human rights activists declared the men political prisoners because they expressed peaceful protest.

Subsequently, the authorities were forced to partially meet the demands of the protesters, gasifying the villages, because heating by electricity cost the settlers dearly. -03D06-
