Climate changes threats to the forests in Azerbaijan
The vulnerability of Azerbaijani forests to climate change and the potential negative impacts are the main topic a new study, released this spring by the EU-funded FLEG II programme in Azerbaijan.
The study reports that the potential negative impacts are also likely to reach beyond the forests themselves into the communities and economies that depend on forests and their ecosystem services.
FLEG urges national and local authorities to "take [the impacts of climate change on forests] as an urgent important issue and include local investment as priority in local development plans", because impacts such as forest fires, droughts, outbreaks of pests and diseases "will all be more frequent and more intense as a result of climate change."
The €9 million ENPI FLEG II programme deepens reforms in forestry policy, and legal and administrative matters in the sector while carrying out pilot projects, and addressing forest fire and climate issues. It builds upon the achievements of its predecessor, ENPI FLEG I programme.-0-
