Coastal Crisis in Azerbaijan: Hidden Sewage Discharges at Zagulba-Buzovna Beaches
In a revealing video recorded by visitors to Buzovna beach and disseminated by the information portal azinform, the hidden discharge of sewage into the Caspian Sea under the cover of night has come to light, sparking concerns about environmental neglect and public health risks.
The video, which shows untreated sewage flowing into the sea, follows a report by the Turan news agency. The earlier report included articles, videos, and photos documenting similar discharges at Zagulba and Buzovna beaches. While the pipe discharging sewage at Buzovna was removed, creating a superficial impression that the pollution source was addressed, the reality, as the new video shows, is far from resolved.
Local authorities, it seems, have opted for a cosmetic fix, perhaps hoping to pacify critics without addressing the underlying issues. This approach has been metaphorically likened to wearing sunglasses at night – a futile attempt to obscure a glaring problem.
The footage from Buzovna beach starkly illustrates the unsanitary conditions that beachgoers face. Pools of sewage mar the shoreline, posing serious health risks to those who visit the beach and swim in its waters. The need for a comprehensive beach management policy and stringent enforcement of sanitation regulations has never been more apparent.
Despite the removal of the conspicuous pipe at Buzovna, untreated sewage continues to flow into the sea from other areas of the beach. Meanwhile, state agencies have reported on various meetings and bureaucratic activities purportedly aimed at addressing the issue. However, the persistent pollution problem underscores the ineffectiveness of these measures.
The environmental crisis in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea is reaching a critical point. The continuous discharge of untreated sewage not only threatens marine life but also endangers public health and tarnishes the reputation of Azerbaijan's beaches as safe and clean recreational areas.
As the authorities grapple with this mounting problem, it is clear that more than superficial measures are needed. A unified, transparent, and enforced beach policy is essential to protect the Caspian coastline and ensure that beaches like Buzovna are safe for all. The current state of affairs calls for urgent action and accountability to prevent further environmental degradation and safeguard public health.

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
