Court rejects appeal from Hilal Mamedov

The Baku Court of Appeal held January 21 consideration of the complaint from the convicted editor of Tolyshi Sado Hilal Mamedov against the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor General.

Mamedov said that the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor General's office violated his right to the presumption of innocence in their joint statement of July 4, 2013 by presenting him as a person who committed the crime, although his guilt was not proved by the court.

Mamedov requires defendants to pay him compensation for moral damages - 50 000 manats each.

Baku Administrative - Economic Court Number 1 on August 18, 2013 rejected the claim from Mamedov , after which he filed an appeal , which was considered today under the chairmanship of Sariya Seyidova.

In his speech today Mamedov noted the misrepresentation and breach of the presumption of innocence in the statement by the Prosecutor General and the Ministry of Internal Affairs .

In particular, the statement referring to some citizen alleged that Mamedov was attracted to cooperation with foreign secret services to the detriment of the territorial integrity and independence of Azerbaijan, and was engaged in inciting ethnic and religious hatred and drug trafficking .

The report also talked about Mamedov getting money from a representative of the Iranian security Abdoli Ali. It was also said that Iranian intelligence obtained information from Mamedov.

Mamedov said that the allegations were not confirmed during the trial.

Representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General's Office were not present at the trial .

As a result, the court dismissed the petition by Mamedov and upheld the trial court's decision.

Mamedov was arrested June 21, 2012 by the Narcotics Staff of the Ministry of Internal Affairs on charges of drug trafficking. Subsequently, he was accused of treason and inciting ethnic hatred.

Local human rights activists believe that Mamedov is persecuted for his critical comments to the popular music videos, "Who are you, let's goodbye" posted by him on the Internet So, Mamedov noted that this clip with its massive popularity glorified Azerbaijan more than Eurovision, on which the authorities spent huge amounts of money. Amnesty International recognized Mamedov "prisoner of conscience." -06D-
