Human rights activists took the initiative in connection with the upcoming pardon
Baku/26.01.23/Turan: The Monitoring Group of Human Rights Organizations of Azerbaijan (MGHROA) submitted a list of names of up to 30 political prisoners to the Pardon Commission, Novella Jafaroglu, a member of the MGHROA, the head of the Society for the Protection of Women's Rights named after Dilara Aliyeva, told Turan.
In February, the commission will be presented with an updated list with the inclusion of new persons. In addition, human rights activists will ask for pardon for those who have been in prison for more than 20 years, convicted of serious crimes due to "certain circumstances."
Among those, the human rights activist named the defendants in the case of the “OPON rebellion of 1995”, members of the Garangush detachment, and others.
It should be noted that these persons were initially sentenced to death, however, in connection with the abolition of the death penalty, the death penalty was replaced by life imprisonment. The investigation into these cases, according to human rights activists, was conducted biased, the charges were unreasonably aggravated.
The day before, the head of the parliamentary committee on human rights, Zahid Oruj, said that in May this year there would be another pardon, timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliyev. ---06B---
